What is Citizen Corps?
President Bush has stated, “We created Citizen Corps to help coordinate volunteer activities that will make our communities safer, stronger, and better prepared to respond to emergency situations.”
Governor Jeb Bush appointed the Florida Division of Emergency Management as the coordinating state agency to facilitate this community based initiative. Palm Beach County, Department of Public Safety, Division of Emergency Management has created The Palm Beach County Citizen Corps to fulfill this mission. Citizen Corps involves all local volunteer agencies promoting community safety, emergency preparedness and disaster response.
Palm Beach County Citizen Corps will serve as a bridge between the county, emergency agencies and our greatest resource: the volunteers who help keep our county safe!
This partnership will lead toward improvements in emergency preparedness not only between the county and the partnering agencies but also between various agencies themselves. Involving volunteers and helping them learn how different teams work together in emergency management is an important part of this goal. The result will be that when disaster strikes, all member agencies and their volunteers will be better able to provide recovery efforts.
Palm Beach County Citizen Corps coordinates volunteer training courses including exercises and drills and offers educational information to address crime, terrorism and natural disasters.
The Mission of Citizen Corps
The mission of Palm Beach County Citizen Corps is the development of a safer, more disaster resistant community through the coordination and networking of first responder and volunteer agencies under the umbrella organization known as Citizen Corps. Working together we can provide the community with a well-trained, readily available pool of “professional volunteers” who know their local areas and who can help during critical times when outside assistance may not yet have arrived. Citizen Corps activities are designed to work closely with all emergency agencies, encourage cross training of volunteers and provide multiple choices in the volunteer arena while building the community’s pool of specialy trained volunteers.
